- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Roxanne Russell -- Disappointment : After plowing through far too many boring descriptions of basketball games...I finish the book not knowing the answer to the most basic question: why was the first sister killed? and why were the killers targeting the second sister? I mean c'mon. This is kind of must-have information in a so-called mystery. I applaud Johnson for bringing to light the horrible abuse of Native American girls....but this wasn't enough to carry the story. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2021 )

There’s no indication of that actually but this sure doesn’t seem like the same style as previous Longmire books. There are just too many lame plot twists. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Laughing Raccoon -- Fantastic book : I absolutely loved this book. First of all, it shined a light on MMIW, which is a cause near and dear to my heart. I love the way these books are so sensitive to Native Spirituality. So many others just chalk everything up to myths and bullcrap and that is simply not the case. It was great to see Virgil still playing a part. Out of all the characters in these books, I will have to say Virgil is the most memorable, and if I'm being honest, my favorite. And Bear....he finally got to release some of his inner bada** this go around. Henry made Vic look like a Sunday School teacher this go around....and that is something I thought impossible. But these books are all about making the impossible very possible. I will have to say this is my very favorite book series and if the books coming are as great as this one, Longmire will be my #1 forever. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from LEP -- Very mystic : I like and enjoy Craig Johnson's Longmire series, however, I found this latest one slightly hard going. All the books have some Native American mysticism in them but this is full of it and I think it suffered slightly in that there was more mysticism than action. Walt is asked by Lola Long, the Reservation police chief, to look into a series of threatening notes that Jaya, her niece and top basket ball star, has been receiving. A year previously, Jeanie, Jay's elder sister, went missing whilst accepting a ride home with others from a party. There have been mysterious sightings of the girl who is always singing the same song. Is she alive or dead? The song that she sings is one that the Eveohstse-heomese sing. They are a collective of lost or wandering souls who predate on the living. Walt and Henry are drawn into both cases, with Henry getting increasingly worried that Walt is getting drawn into something that he doesn't understand. The Longmire series is not one that you can just pick up a book and read at random, in my opinion, you need to read the series to understand the characters and the Native American symbolism used. The way that Native Americans are treated and how they live is disturbing, more so in this book, and I presume that Johnson knows as he lives in Wyoming next to a Reservation. Suffice to say the story is timely and maintains Mr.Johnson's status as a teller of meaningful,disciplined storys.
